Architecture, Restoration, sustainable Construction

Cluster

  • Construction, Architecture and Infrastructure

Description

The research group focuses on the project of architecture, restoration and sustainable construction, grounded in a shared critical reflection on the relationship between the ancient and the new, framed within a multiscalar and transdisciplinary approach applied to the realities of both historical and contemporary architectures and landscapes. Organized in a laboratory format – ARCos Laboratory of the DPIA Civil Engineering and Architecture Section – the group integrates architectural and urban design, conservation of historical-architectural heritage, construction efficiency and research conducted from the constructive detail to the project for the city and landscape. This work also encompasses structural considerations and the use of sustainable materials, with the aim of reducing the environmental impact of building activities.

The experience gained through research and project activities, participation in competitions and construction sites, established agreements and nationally and internationally funded projects positions the group as a qualified partner for public, private and third-sector organizations in the development of basic and experimental research, as well as training and consultancy activities. The group also integrates its research themes and lines of inquiry into teaching and internship activities, undergraduate and graduate theses in the Bachelor's Degree in Architectural Sciences, Master's Degree in Architecture, Bachelor's Degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering and Master's Degree in Civil Engineering at the University of Udine, as well as doctoral theses within the Trieste-Udine Interuniversity PhD Program in Civil-Environmental Engineering and Architecture.

Research subjects

  • fragile contexts and urban voids: the projects for the city and the transformation of places, with particular reference to disused or underutilized heritage;
  • discarded spaces and marginal landscapes: the projects for the landscape and the regeneration of built environments, particularly those that are abandoned or vulnerable;
  • compositional and formal categories: the architectural composition, spatial and constructive characters, the elements and logics of the form, the themes and tools of architectural and landscape project, with particular attention to 20th-century Friulian architecture and its masters;
  • heritage conservation: understood in the broad sense of historical artifacts, with explicit reference to the relationship between existing structures and the insertion of new interventions;
  • sustainability of interventions: informed by critical study and knowledge of operational methods and practices;
  • durability of materials: structural and non-structural materials, also considered in relation to climate change and vulnerability;
  • sustainable concrete: study of the structural characteristics of eco-friendly concrete produced from recycled waste materials, with attention to durability;
  • timber structures: analysis of innovative X-Lam structures, with focus on sustainability and durability;
  • Life Cycle Assessment (LCA): applied to structures and buildings, including comparisons and proposals for building and structural solutions with reduced environmental impact.
