Description

The research group mainly works in the field of basic geological research, on a wide range of topics: - Surface geological survey: the group, which uses a highly specialized geological mapping laboratory, participated in the production of several geological maps within the CARG project (National Geological Mapping Project, at a scale of 1:50,000). In Friuli, the group produced the following maps: Gemona del Friuli, Udine, Maniago, San Vito al Tagliamento; in Veneto the group took part in the production of the following maps: Monselice, Padua, Longarone; in Val d'Aosta the group participated in the detail survey of the Piemonte Ophiolite Nappe. - Seismotectonic characterisation of the Eastern Southern Alps. The research aims at the identification and geometric characterisation of the main active and potentially capable faults in the north-eastern and western Slovenian area. Such characterisation is of fundamental importance in seismic hazard analysis. The survey techniques range from soil survey (geological-structural and morphotectonic analyses), to the use of both deep and superficial geognostic data (analyses of deep seismic lines and geophysical survey), up to the use of paleoseismological survey techniques. Given the multidisciplinary nature of the research, it is carried out in collaboration with other research institutes such as the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology of Rome, CNR, OGS and ENI. In this same context, some research conventions have recently been developed with the Geological Service of the FVG Region. - Thermometamorphic evolution of crystalline basements: the group participated, in collaboration with the Universities of Milano Statale (Department of Earth Sciences) and Milano Bicocca (Department of Environmental and Earth Sciences), in the definition of the Alpine metamorphic evolution in sections of the Piemonte Ophiolite Nappe (Val d'Aosta); the Variscan metamorphic evolution of the eastern Southern Alps (the Bressanone area) and the Cimmerian metamorphic evolution (Central Iran). - Teaching of Earth Sciences: in collaboration with the Research Unit in Physics Teaching of the University of Udine, the group participated in the research on the cognitive processes in the learning of science, in general, and earth sciences, in particular. The research is of great importance for the definition of the nature of geosciences and for teaching and curricular innovation of earth sciences.
