Description

The research subjects of the Urban-Rural Territorial Dynamics and Ecosystem Services unit concern the study of territorial changes deriving from the expansion of urban areas, with particular reference to the use of the land, the landscape-cultural mosaic and the capacity of open spaces to produce ecosystem services. The research activities concern:  the development of spatially explicit methods for mapping the ecosystem and landscape services (i.e. those benefits deriving from landscapes rather than ecosystems);  the analysis of land consumption for the quantitative and qualitative aspects, with particular reference to the impacts on the landscape-cultural mosaic and landscape patterns;  methods and criteria for integrating green infrastructures into planning;  implementation of territorial suitability assessments in a GIS environment based on multi-criteria methods. The research is based on the use of geographic information systems, spatial analysis techniques and prevalent use of territorial data (raster and vector data, remote sensing images and statistical data). In addition to research, consultancy and services, concerning the analysis and territorial evaluation sectors, are offered to public bodies, private organizations and companies.
