Environmental and Energy Engineering Science


The production of energy in a sustainable manner is a vast field of research application that requires interdisciplinary methodological skills. The PhD programme is a centre for the development of research and training activities in the fields of chemical and energy technologies with particular reference to the environment. The aim is to attract students in the course's reference areas, which are those of industrial, materials, process and environmental engineering and the chemical and physical sciences, and to provide them with the basic methodological tools needed to tackle research and development projects with a high industrial connotation. The macro areas of reference are those typical of process engineering (energy, environmental, chemical and materials) with strong interactions with basic sciences: energy sources (fossil, renewable, nuclear); energy conversion; energy saving; energy economics; environmental impact; sustainability of products, processes and materials; safety of processes, structures and the environment; materials for the environment and energy.

The PhD course aims to train specific skills in the field of sustainable energy production. Numerous laboratory collaborations with companies/entities are part of the PhD programme, which regularly fund ad hoc grants and, in almost all cases, enable PhD students to gain direct experience in the industrial world during the three-year training period.
In addition to this, doctoral students usually gain important experience abroad at qualified international research centres during the three-year course. The research activities carried out in the PhD course often concern the field of applied research and as such are closely linked to the world of work. The topics proposed are also highly topical and of specific industrial interest: therefore the specific skills acquired by PhD students in the three-year course are in great demand in the professional field. For all these reasons, the insertion of doctoral students into the world of work is optimal.
