Vision and educational objectives
In an increasingly interconnected and globalized world, the humanities must implement paths of study and research aligned with the most recent and innovative directions of the Digital Humanities and more specifically, with the protocols and methods that have distinguished the Visual (or Pictorial) Turn. Similarly, a progressive reshaping of communication and dissemination practices in light of the latest trends in Digital Storytelling and the new audiences so afferent appears crucial. In this scenario, a rigorous and comprehensive training along the already traditional and established disciplinary axes remains functional to ensure an informed approach to the complexity of the phenomena at hand.
The Doctorate in Art History, Cinema, Audiovisual Media and Music aims to promote specialized research in the fields of art history (from the Middle Ages to the contemporary age), audiovisual (cinema, TV, photography, new media) and musicology. It aims to train young scholars by providing them with a solid knowledge base and methodological tools appropriate to the current reality.
The distinctive elements of the proposed course pertain to the specificity of knowledge and fields of investigation, scientific laboratory facilities, basic methods (bibliographic reconnaissance, documentary and archival research, analysis and criticism of sources, historiographic investigation, stylistic and iconographic reading) augmented by an articulated network of skills concerning: the philological and historical-critical analysis of artistic, photographic, film, audiovisual and musical work; the study of art, film and audiovisual and musical institutions; theories and techniques of production, dissemination, reception; exhibition and museum design; museum architecture; preservation practices, theoretical models and protocols of conservation and restoration of artistic, photographic, cinematographic, audiovisual and musical heritage; media archaeology; archiving of artistic, photographic, cinematographic audiovisual and musical works; management, accessibility/dissemination, sustainability of art historical, photographic, cinematographic, audiovisual and musical archives.
The Ph.D., through its extensive network of international relations, fosters and promotes experiences in extranational research venues and international dissemination of research outcomes.

Curricula
The course is divided into 2 curricula:
• History of Art. It promotes advanced research in the following fields: History of art, from the Middle Ages to the contemporary age; History of architecture; Museology and art criticism.
• Cinema, Audiovisual Media, Musicology.It promotes advanced research in the following fields: History of film and media theories; Philology of cinema; History of Italian and European cinema and media; Protection and restoration of cinematographic, media and musical works; Musicology and media; Management and practices of film, media and music archives; Preservation and protection of digital products.
Job opportunities
The main purpose of the PhD project in History of Art, Cinema, Audiovisual Media and Musicology is the definition of new professional job descriptions in advanced research, placed within the international scientific context.
The research training activities, defined by the curricula and by their specific or joint seminar programs, allow the PhD student to achieve innovative scientific skills. These can be implemented in universities and national and international research centers, at institutions and private and public bodies in the sector, as well as within the framework of the highly specialized professionalism required by the museum, archival, and festival systems and by the cultural and media industry.
