Objectives

The course aims to supply the methodology for the study and the design of microwave circuits and devices.

Acquired skills

- Comprehension of terms and parameters in use for the study of microwave circuits.
- Design of microwave devices (metallic and dielectric resonators, filters, directional couplers, etc.).

Lectures and exercises (topics and specific content)

Impendance matching: microstrip, stripline, coplanar line, etc.; the theory of small reflections; binomial multisection matching transformers, Chebyshev multisection matching transformers; tapers (8 hours).
Microwave resonators: series and parallel resonant circuits; transmission line resonators; waveguide cavities; cavity perturbations (8 hours).
Microwave filters:  filter design by the insertion loss method; filter transformations; periodic structures (8 hours).
Microwave network analysis: impedance and equivalent voltages and currents; impedance and admittance matrices; the scattering matrix; the transmission matrix; signal flow graphs  (8 hours).
Microwave devices: basic properties of dividers and couplers; the wilkinson power divider; waveguide directional couplers; branch-line directional couplers; coupled line directional couplers; the hybrid ring; the magic T (8 hours).
Exercises (6 hours).
Labs (14 hours).
