Objectives
The students will develop a comprehension of the molecular mechanisms underlying the interaction of fungal and bacterial pathogens with their plant hosts. Molecular signals, regulation, and major physiological and genetic aspects of pathogenesis, virulence, and resistance will be treated with focus on the gapevine diseases.
Contents
Methods for in the study of molecular physiopathology (mutagenesis, yeast two hybrids, expression analysis).
Pathogen weapons: Enzymes, toxins, effectors. Avirulence and gene per gene. Secretion of virulence factors.
Molecular basis of recognition and defence of plants: Innate immunity. Hypersensitive reaction and programmed cell death. Phytoalexins and phytoanticipins. PR proteins. Systemic acquired resistance.
Powdery mildew, downy mildew, the cultivar specific resistance, and the arms race.
Botrytis cinerea, necrotrophic pathogens, and the trench warfare.
Beneficial interactions. Induced resistance. Mycorrhiza.
Bibliography
The material for individual study will be provided by the teacher and will consist of specific course notes and a limited number of scientific review papers
