Dynamics and control of turbomachinery and internal combustion engines (the English translation of "Dinamica e controllo delle macchine a fluido")
Teacher
prof. Gianmario ARNULFI
Credits
6 CFU
Language
Italian
Objectives
Fundamentals of dynamics (transient phenomena) and control (full-load and part-load) of the most usual types of power plants and their components. Linear and non-linear models of these systems are developed in order to provide a deep understanding of their behavior.
Acquired skills
- To know principles and methods to control power plants and their components.
- To know the dynamic behavior of power plants and their components in transient operations.
- To develop easy dynamic models of power plants and their components.
- To apply the automatic control theory to power plants and their components.
Lectures and exercises (topics and specific content)
Basic topics: cases of control systems and servo-systems for energy technology; errors and corrections, proportional, integrative, derivative; review of control theory (6 hours).
Typical components: transducers; mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, electric control devices; lead and lag networks; servo-valve with zero lap or under lap; slide-valve and linear actuator (cylinder) combination (12 hours).
Power plant: hydro power plants, power; reservoir level; steam power plants, partial admission and valve throttling; boiler-follow and turbine-follow; isodromic and non-isodromic operation; gas turbine, compressors unsteady behavior; GT off-design performance, internal combustion engine, matching with load; injection systems (steady state and mean value approach) (16 hours).
Labs - tests on a hydraulic unit spool-valve and cylinder during a transient operation (6 hours).
Lab of numerical simulation - Simulation of compressor surge (18 hours).
Tutorials / Seminars (2 hours).
