SPECIFIC EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

The course aims to provide a first level of understanding of the close relationship between
architectural design and construction. The introductory part to practical experience provides monographic  lessons on specific issues concerning the knowledge of traditional and innovative materials of architecture . The practical  exercises provide a path of learning by doing, which is developed through activities of construction of models at different scales up to in 1: 1 scale. Students are challenged to design and build
simple architectural spaces and construction details by applying the theoretical knowledge acquired in  the reali field.

ACQUIRED SKILLS

Learning by doing, ability to conceive and realize models, the ability to design and achieve scale projects simple architectural spaces, ability to conceive and build folding
architetcure, ability to conceive and build arches, vaults and domes of made with dry bricks without mortar , ability to conceive and build brickworks and  wall textures.

CONTENTS

Introduction: Structuring the course into lessons and thematic workshops. (5 hours)
Vitruvius : Reading and critical learning of an historical outstanding  manual of architecture as a guide for building . (10 hours)

Atelier Textures: Learning basics, conception and realization of texture through walls
models and subsequently building on a scale of 1: 1 (8 hours)

Atelier inhabited wall: Learning basics, conception and realization of an inhabited wall intended as an architectural space through minimal models and later built a 1: 1 (8 hours)

Atelier arches and vaults: basic objective of this workshop is to bring the student to the concept  of  arch and vault  as basic

through the realization of different types of arches and vaults before at the small  scale of a maquette then to true scale (1:1) with and without the use of mortar (8 hours)

Atelier domes: basic objective of this workshop is to help the students of architecture  concept  of dome through the realization of different types of domes first at the  scale of maquette then at the real  scale (1:1)  with or  without the use of mortar (8 hours)

Atelier earth construction : Learning the basics about the technological tests for the selection of earth suitable for  construction, practical realization of an adobe (earthen sun-dried brick) (8 hours)

Stereotomy: History and Project (3 hours)

Building with stone: Knowledge of technologies and types of building in stone (3 hours)
Building with wood: Knowledge of technologies and types of building in wood (3 hours)
Building with earth   : Knowledge of technologies and types of building with raw earth and fired bricks (3 hours)

Building with  steel and copper: Knowledge of technologies and types of construction steel and copper (3 hours)
