Objectives
This course gives the student a basic knowledge of mechanical and electromagnetic waves, their interference and diffraction and their connection with optics and acoustics. The black body theory is studied in detail and in general the student shoud end up with a fair knowledge of the introductory facts to wave mechanics. It’s also requested from the student that he acquires a working knowledge of the different subjects.
Acquired skills

Lectures and exercises (topics and specific content)
Elettromagnetic waves: Faraday’s law; equation of the waves in em and in mechanics; solutions of the wave equation; energy and momentum carried by waves; Lorentz invariance of the wave equation (10 hours).
Mechanical waves: waves on a string in a bar and in a gas (5 hours).
Optics: interference and diffraction of waves; interference a la Young; Newton’s rings (10 hours).
The black body: Kirchhoff’s, Wien’s and Stefan-Boltzmann’s law; the ultraviolet catastrophy; Plank’s solution; the quantization of energy; the photoelectric effect; the Compton Effect (15 hours).
