Objectives

To achieve the basic tools in order to perform a strength analysis of beam-shaped mechanical elements, to handle solutions and models to be adopted by the engineer in the mechanical analysis, to deal with simple theory of elasticity problems.

Acquired skills

- Structural analysis of simple mechanical elements.
- Stress and strain analysis of axles and shafts.

Lectures and exercises (topics and specific content)

Beam static: forces and constrains in beam-shaped mechanical elements; normal force, shearing force and bending moment diagrams (8 hours).
Theory of elasticity: stress and strain, Hooke law, elastic strain energy (10 hours).
Elementary theory of beam: axles and shafts, tension and compression, flexure and torsion; curved beam theory (10 hours).
Mechanics of materials: mechanical characteristics of materials; tensile test; strain-gauges (4 hours).
Advanced static of elastic structures: principle of virtual work, statically indeterminate structure, instability (8 hours).
Equivalent stress: safety coefficient; failure criteria, static load (4 hours).
Exercises (16 hours).
