Objectives

By using the fundamental principles of chemical kinetics and thermodynamics the course is intended to give the basis of reactor design for gas and liquid phase reaction with particular attention to issues related to environment and energy applications.

Contents

Chemical reaction engineering: Mole balances, conversion and reactor sizing, rate laws and stoichiometry of reaction. (4 hours)
Reaction kinetics: Elements of chemical kinetics. Rate laws. Reaction order. Kinetic constants. Reaction mechanisms. (4 hours)
Design of isothermal reactors: Tubular packed reactors. Pressure drops. Catalytic reactors. (6 hours)
Non isothermal reactors: Energy balance equation. Heat of reaction. Adiabatic tubular reactors. Non adiabatic reactors. Equilibrium converions. Application to real examples. Unsteady state applications. (8 hours)
Multiple reactions: Consecutive reactions. parallel reactions. Stoichiometries and rate laws. (6 hours)
Catalysis and catalytic reactors: Step of catalytic reactions. Rate law and mechanism. (4 hours)
Bioreactors and bioreaction: Elements of biochemical reaction engineering. (6 hours)
Combustion engineering: Introduction to kinetic and thermodynamics of combustion. (6 hours)
