Objectives
The acquisition of basic knowledge of matrix methods applied to structural analysis of framed structures and of the basics of structure modeling by structural analysis programs.

To model and analyze a framed structure by means of a structural analysis program with a clear understanding of the involved algorithms.
Contents
General introduction. An introduction to matrix methods for simple plane trusswork structures. Computational aspects and algorithms. Extensions to dynamics an non linear problems. (10 hours)
The matrix method for plane frames (4 hours)
The matrix method for 3D framed structures. Element stiffness matrix and load matrix. Element and node local reference frames. Rigid end connections. Frame end releases. Frame end elastic connections. Restraints (equality, diaphragm and rigid body) . Assembling and solving the equations. Internal stress calculations. (16 hours)
Stiffness matrix for the beam on Winkler soil. (4 hours)
Second order effects. Geometric stiffness matrix. Critical load multiplier. (4 hours)
Dynamics of structures. The mass matrix. Semi discrete equations of dynamics with damping. Modal analysis and equation decoupling. Response spectra analysis. Direct integration of the equation of motion. Newmark integration algorithms. (12 hours)
Exercises and tutorials using a structural analysis program (10 hours)
