Objectives

The course aims to give students a thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of reinforced concrete structures, also with regard to the basic concepts of seismic design.

- The students will be able to gain an undestanding of the structural and seismic deisgn principles

Reinforced concrete structure design
Ultimate load and service load structure behaviour (12 hours)
Reinforced concrete structure design
Strength and ductility (6 hours)
Reinforced concrete structure design
Limit design, Moment redistribution and plastic hinge rotation (6 hours)
Reinforced concrete structure design
Design procedures for structures under vertical load (10 hours)
Reinforced concrete structure design
Structural systems for lateral loading (4 hours)
Earthquakes and ground shaking
Tectonic plates, faults, earthquake magnitude and intensity, characteristics of ground shaking (6 hours)
Seismic design
Response of single degree of freedom system to lateral loading (6 hours)
Seismic design
Seismic action, response spectra (4 hours)
Seismic design
Equivalent lateral force procedure, Modal superposition techniques, Non linear static analysis, Dynamic inelastic time history analysis (8 hours)
Seismic design
Collapse mechanisms, structural ductility, capacity design, detailing. (12 hours)
Structural modelling and FEM
Introduction to Finite element analysis, examples of FEM analysis (6 hours)
Slabs and deep beams
Slab elastic analysis, reinforcement detailing criteria. Deep beam elastic analysis, Strut and Tie models 16 Prestressed concrete structures Concrete and steel mechanic characteristics, prestress types, loss of prestress force. Cables layout. Elastic and ultimate limit state behavior. (12 hours)
Structural design
During the course Students will develop structural design of a reinforced concrete building in a seismic area. (8 hours)
