Objectives

The course focuses on the wireless communication theoretical principles and practical techniques, in particular: cellular concept, mobile radio channel models; data transmission in fading channels and diversity techniques; multiple access schemes (TDMA, FDMA, CDMA, SDMA); multicarrier systems (OFDM, FMT); code division multiple access; ultra wide band (UWB) systems; wireless standards (GSM, UMTS, IEEE 802.11/15/16).

- Knowledge of the fundamental techniques and algorithms for wireless communications.
- Theoretical tools for modelling and performance analysis.
- Digital receiver techniques and performance in fading channels.
- Cellular concept and various multiple access schemes.
- Main characteristics of cellular and wireless PAN/LAN/MAN standards.

Lectures and exercises (topics and specific content)

Specific aspects of wireless communication systems: summary of radio systems and cellular mobile systems; cellular concepts and system capacity (8 hours).
Multiple access schemes: time division multiple access (TDMA), Frequency division multiple access (FDMA), Code division multiple access (CDMA), Space division multiple access (SDMA); contention based multiple access, Aloha, slotted Aloha (6 hours).
Mobile radio channel models: channel models in mobile environments and fading models; Clarke’s fast fading model (10 hours).
Performance of digital modulation: analysis of performance of digital modulation schemes in fading channels (10 hours).
Multiple antenna systems and diversity: optimization of performance via multiple antenna systems and exploitation of diversity (6 hours).
Multicarrier modulation: orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), and filtered multitone modulation (FMT) (6 hours).
Code division systems: Frequency Hopping and Code Division Multiple Access schemes (8 hours).
Ultra wide band systems (UWB): impulsive modulation and multi-band solution (2 hours).
Standards: main characteristics of cellular standards (GSM, UMTS) and wireless PAN/LAN/MAN IEEE 802.11/15/16 (2 hours).
