The doctoral programme aims to further the development of research in the field of the prevention and management of healthcare-associated infections. The topic is of central interest in public health, both nationally and internationally, especially because of the relevance of the outcomes in terms of disability and mortality. The research will be oriented towards improving knowledge about the routes of antibiotic administration, in particular the subcutaneous route, by expanding the methodologies and practices that constitute the standard of care to date.

The systematic literature review represents a fundamental first step in the doctoral programme, as it offers a comprehensive overview of the currently available scientific evidence on the pathophysiological and clinical processes related to antibiotic absorption; the subsequent results will provide the basis for the design and implementation of the subsequent research phases.
The second phase of the programme will be oriented towards the development of a clinical trial aimed at investigating aspects of safety and efficacy in the subcutaneous administration of specific antibiotics; the evaluation of the effects will also take into account clinical and organisational outcomes, with a focus on patient-related outcomes. The third phase of the programme will be the in-depth study of infections related to care practices, in particular in relation to compromised care (missed care). This approach will provide a better understanding of the role that quality of care plays in determining the risk and frequency of nosocomial infections and in developing possible interventions.
