Cycling for Health and Enviroment: un piano per favorire la mobilità sostenibile e migliorare la salute a Udine

The urban context is one of the main determinants of people’s lifestyle and health. Evidence-based urban planning and policy decision-making can modify the existing built environment and public spaces to create the conditions that support public health, and facilitate the transition to a sustainable mobility. In the field of private transport, cycling offers an ecological alternativ,e and supports a healthier lifestyle. We know that cycling commuting with an average one-way trip of 7-8 km reduces the chances to develop several chronic diseases associated with inactivity.
This trip-length is twice the 3-4 km threshold considered in the majority of urban cycling policies. We will seek evidence of an association between built environment, health benefits and bicycle commuting, in active and sedentary volunteers commuting in the area of Udine and surroundings.
This evidence will be used to inform the development of an urban transport planning strategy to support preventive medicine.
