H2020 - SMART PROTEIN - Smart Protein for a Changing World. Futureproof alternative terrestrial protein sources for human nutrition encouraging environment regeneration, processing feasibility and consumer trust and accepta
The project focuses on fostering industrially feasible actions to achieve far-reaching progress in providing validated processes and production of high quality terrestrial proteins for food from alternative plant and fungi, moving available solutions, generated from the up and running H2020 “PORTEIN2FOOD” project (www.protein2food.eu) from TRL 5 to TRL 6. The alternative proteins will be generated by developing and accessing advanced bioprocessing systems, incorporating closed loop coproducts and up-cycling activities, ensuring socioeconomic and environmental acceptability. The key project challenges will be assessing the use of bioprocess technologies and food engineering systems with high commercial potential, enhancing the functionality and nutritional quality of target proteins for food, up-cycling food waste stream/food by-products within a resilient circular food system and, finally, assessing the economic, logistical and environmental sustainability of the implemented SMART-PRO food value chain.
