Cultural Mediation

The degree course answers the needs (particularly felt in the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region) to develop professional cultural and linguistic mediators between Italy and European countries, especially those in Eastern and Central Europe, in particular after the recent enlargement of the European Union. Graduates will have a solid linguistic basis in Italian and in two other languages and their related literatures and cultures, as well as a basic competence in a third language. A basic knowledge of English will be guaranteed even if the student chooses another language as his/her third language. Other specific competences in history, economy and law related to intercultural communication will be imparted, alongside theoretical and practical skills in mainly written mediation. Graduates will also learn how to use and manage IT instruments and techniques and will do professional practice in the field of linguistic and cultural mediation thanks to specific internships.

Besides offering graduates tangible career opportunities, the Course also provides them with the cultural and scientific bases needed to attend Magister degree courses, aimed at providing a higher level of scientific and professional preparation.

All Language and Translation courses and Literature and Civilization courses present in the study plan are propedeutical. Therefore, students cannot, for instance, take their Language and Translation II year exam before passing Language and Translation I. The same applies to the Literature and Civilization courses.  Language and Translation courses are not propedeutical to Literature and Civilization courses and vice versa.

If the student does not choose the English Language as his/her third language or as an elective course, he/she must use 3 credits form the 3
rd year of Language A and 3 credits from the 3rd year of Language B to do the English Language Test required by the University (6 credits).

Graduates are prepared to be profitably employed in all the professional fields which comprise linguistic, intercultural and economic relations. Graduates can thus access jobs in companies, international institutions and organizations, diplomatic and consular representation, publishing, written and multimedia mediation, advertising, mass communication and in Italian Culture institutes abroad.
