MSc in Management Engineering

The Master’s Degree in Management Engineering  is a two-year, 120 ECTS programme, designed to train graduates able to identify, formulate, and solve complex and interdisciplinary problems in industrial and service contexts.

Graduates acquire strong competences in the management of production and logistics systems, the use of information technologies, and the application of economic and organizational methodologies to support strategic and operational decision-making.

The course offers two curricula:

  • Management Engineering – entirely in English;
  • Ingegneria Gestionale – mainly in Italian, with some English modules, including five specializations:
    • Advanced Manufacturing
    • Industrial Management
    • Environmental Sustainability (industrial track)
    • Digital Business and Analytics
    • Information & Communication Technology (ICT track).

A strong international dimension characterizes the programme, thanks to two distinctive opportunities:

1.      Double Degree Programmes in Austria

Students can pursue a Double Degree with partner universities in Graz and Klagenfurt (Austria). These programmes allow students to attend courses abroad, obtain joint recognition of credits, and graduate with two master’s degrees – one Italian and one Austrian – thus expanding their international career prospects. Scholparships are provided to 13 students.

2.      Summer School in New York

The Summer School “Intercultural Management in Global Operations” at St. John’s University (New York, USA) is an intensive 40-hour course (6 ECTS elective credits), held over two weeks between late July and early August. Every year 28 merit-based places are assigned through a competitive selection process; scholarships cover tuition and part of travel/accommodation costs. The initiative is supported by Danieli, ABS, ALIg, and Fondazione Friuli.

Students benefit from ALIg, the Management Engineering Alumni Association, which promotes the career development, visibility, and employability of graduates. ALIg organizes mentoring activities, networking events, and a Career Fair with direct participation of major companies. The Association creates a bridge between students, alumni, and industry, supporting career transitions and professional growth.

Examples of companies participating in the Career Fair include:
ABS – Acciaierie Bertoli Safau, Amazon Italia, Danieli, Electrolux Professional, Fincantieri, Generali, Hitachi Energy, Lima Corporate, Nestlé, Nidec, Pittini Group, Rizzani de Eccher, Savio Macchine Tessili, Stroili Oro, Taghleef Industries, Technest, Unicredit, Umana, Vega, and many others across manufacturing, services, finance, and technology.

The University of Udine is located in a region with a high concentration of energy-intensive manufacturing industries and a dynamic ecosystem of technological start-ups.

Choosing Udine means joining an innovative, international, and career-driven programme, where academic excellence is combined with strong industry connections and real professional opportunities.

Selection rules for students with foreign qualifications

The international master programme has 20 slots per academic year. The selection is based on candidates’ CV evaluation and will be closed once the maximum number of available slots is reached.

Requirements:

  • A relevant Bachelor’s degree (Industrial Engineering or IT Engineering), obtained within the last five years.
  • Final grade: ≥ 90/110 (Italian system) or ≥ ¾ of the maximum (foreign equivalent).
  • At least B1 CEFR level of English.

Courses start at the end of September, and students must already be in Udine by then. Non-EU students should carefully plan VISA requirements, travel, and accommodation.

For details: see the Application Presentation Guide.

Students learn to:

  • Control quality, time, costs, and resources in industrial projects.
  • Manage engineering-to-order contexts and marketing for industrial goods.
  • Apply principles of strategic planning.
  • Organize and govern complex socio-technical systems.
  • Design and manage databases and information systems, evaluating integration, architecture, costs, and benefits.

The course is also connected to an international programme with FH Joanneum (Austria), where students attend joint courses and obtain credits recognized by both universities.

Management Engineers are able to apply methods of production/logistics configuration, IT solutions, and economic analysis to solve organizational and operational challenges.

Typical positions include:

  • Innovation and production development.
  • Advanced design and planning.
  • Management of complex systems (in manufacturing, services, or public administration).
  • Supply management, logistics, project management, and management control.
  • Industrial marketing, investment evaluation, and sectoral analysis.

The job market strongly values Management Engineers:

  • ISTAT surveys place them first in Italy for career prospects (shortest time to first job, highest % employed at 3 months and 3 years).
  • AlmaLaurea surveys show they also enjoy the highest average salaries among engineers.
  • Employment spans multiple sectors: mechanical, services, building, textile, electronics, finance, and even insurance.
