Abstract In the realm of topological automorphisms of totally disconnected locally compact groups, the scale function is compared with the topological entropy. Indeed the logarithm of the scale function is proved to be always smaller than the topological entropy; moreover, an example shows that this inequality can be strict, and on the other hand conditions are given to force these two invariants to coincide. Finally, several properties of the scale function inspired by those of the topological entropy are presented.
