Objectives
Providing basic tools to:
- perform the design of machine components;
- understand models and solutions usually applied by mechanical engineers to the static and fatigue analysis of mechanical structures;
- perform stress and deflection analysis of structural elements by means of numerical and experimental approaches.
Acquired skills
- Being able to select the most suitable approach to perform a structural analysis.
- Performing stress and deflection analysis of a structural mechanical component.
- Providing a diagnosis of the failure modes of a mechanical structure.
Lectures and exercises (topics and specific content)
Introduction: static failure of brittle and ductile materials; safety coefficient (2 hours).
Fatigue: basic concepts; fatigue strength; Woehler curve; failure analysis; parameters affecting fatigue strength; Smith and Goodman diagram; lifetime computation cumulative damage (12 hours).
Notch effect: notched geometries; stresses, theoretical, nominal and actual; notch coefficients (6 hours).
Machine elements: structural analysis on: transmission shafts, ball bearings, gears, curved beams, springs tubes (16 hours).
Experimental strain analysis: photoelasticity (2 hours).
Numerical methods: introduction to FEM (6 hours).
Exercises: numerical examples (16 hours).
