Objectives

The course has the purpose of providing the basic knowledge of descriptive geometry, standards and rules of technical drawing, required to perform the correct and complete representation of the industrial product; illustrating the characteristics and techniques of use of the tools for mechanical drawing, both traditional and computer assisted (two-dimensional CAD); applying the acquired knowledge for the execution of technical drawings of mechanical components and/or simple assemblies, developed on the basis of the examination of their representation in orthogonal or isometric projection.

Acquired skills

- Fundamentals and rules of the technical drawing.
- Knowledge of current standards of representation and description of industrial products.
- Execution of dimensioned sketches of simple mechanical pieces.
- Use of a 2D CAD tool for the execution of technical drawing.
- Basic concepts for the management and organization of technical documentation.
- Fundamentals of Product Data Management and Product Lifecycle management Systems.

Lectures and exercises (topics and specific content)

Drawing for design and communication: drawing as the fundamental tool for technical communication, for the engineering design and for the documentation of industrial products (1 hour).
Technical drawing standards: standardization and unification; main rules for technical drawing: projection methods, views, sections, dimensioning; tools for technical drawing (4 hours).
Axonometric and orthographic projections: definitions and classification of projections; parallel projections (orthogonal and oblique axonometric projections)and orthographic projections (Monge method and theory) (6 hours).
Section, intersections and developments of surfaces: sections and surfaces of development of prisms, pyramids, cylinders and cones; intersection of solids and development of surfaces (4 hours).
Sketching and dimensioning of mechanical parts: sketching criteria of simple mechanical parts; choice of views and/or sections; reference systems and dimensioning criteria; functional dimensioning (4 hours).
Tolerancing and surface finishing: errors in pieces construction; tolerancing and fit systems; general tolerances; ISO code system for tolerances on linear sizes; basis of tolerances, deviations and fits; surface finish and roughness, definitions and symbols (4 hours).
Examples of standardized components: fasteners: kinds of fasteners and their classification (1 hour).
Threads and threaded connections: unified thread forms; threaded fasteners; representation of threaded elements, screws, nuts, bolts (4 hours).
Technical drawings in industrial practice: the role of drawings in design and product life cycle; kind of drawing and fundamentals of technical drawings management (2 hours).
PDM and PLM systems: stages of product development and related support technologies; basic concepts, objectives and advantages of Product Data Management and Product Lifecycle Management systems (4 hours).
Introduction to computer aided drafting: the main functions of a 2D CAD system, drawing, editing, display and properties of geometric entities; criteria for the organization of a technical drawing, scaling and printing (6 hours).
Exercises: ortographic projection from isometric views of simple mechanical parts; sketches and 2D-CAD drawings must be completed with dimensioning and any other relative notations; the arguments of the exercises will be combined with the theoretical topics covered during the course (16 hours).
