Prerequisiti e propedeuticità/Requirements

Prerequisites: Matematica Generale of the three-years economical degrees and Matematica Applicata of  the degree in Economia e Commercio.

Conoscenze e abilità da acquisire/Knowledge and skills

The aim of the course is to give the sound mathematical background required to interpret, analyze and elaborate many models of  the economic theory .

Specific knowledges:

concepts in spaces , functions of several variables, differential calculus, problems of unconstrained and constrained  optimization.

Programma e contenuti dell'insegnamento/Course description

1. Spaces , distance, open and closed sets. compact, connected and convex sets.

2. Functions. Geometric representations. Limits and continuity.

3. Differential calculus. Partial derivatives. Differentiability. Derivative along a curve. Derivative of a compound function: chain rule.

4. Implicit functions.

5. Homogeneous functions.

6. Quadratic forms.

7. Unconstrained optimization.

8. Constrained optimization with equality and inequality constraints.

9. Sensitivity analysis.

10. Concave and quasi concave functions, concave programming.

Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento/Examination

There will be a written exam of 2 hours and half, subdivided in three parts: theoretical questions. short exercises of mathematical analysis (first part) and two optimization problems (second part). 16 points are given on  the first part  and 16 points on the optimization part.

To complete the exam there will be an oral discussion of the written exam. The oral discussion, few days after the written test, may change the final score of 1-2 points.

To obtain “30 e lode” it is necessary to obtain at least 29 points in the written exam and show a good ability in linking the concepts.

Testi / Bibliografia/Bibliography

The suggested text is Simon-Blume, Mathematics for Economists. Notes of the lessons are made available in  Materiale Didattico.

Strumenti a supporto della didattica/ Further readings and support material

The lectures include the presentation of theoretical aspects, many examples and proposals of work at home to resume in class. Slides and blackboard.

Tesi di laurea/Thesis
