Objectives

The course provides the fundamentals of Linear Dynamics, with applications to the study of the elastodynamic problem for continuous mechanical systems, such as strings, membranes and curved beams. General properties of the eigenvalue problem are discussed in detail, also in connection with the study of identification problems based on dynamic data.


Acquired skills

To formulate and solve problems for simple structural systems in Linear Elastodynamics.

The vibrating string: mechanical modelling and solution via method of characteristics (12 h)

The method of separation of variables and the strong formulation of the eigenvalue problem (12 h)

Transverse vibration of a pre-stretched membrane (10 h)

Integral formulation of the eigenvalue problem (12 h)

In-plane vibration of a straight beam (6 h)

In-plane vibration of a curved beam (8 h)
