Systems of mass points: equations of motions and conservation theorems. Lagrange's equations. Dynamics of the rigid body. Small motions. Application of Lagrange's equations to structures: examples.

Linear dynamics of a 1 d.o.f. oscillator.

Free vibrations. Response to periodic, harmonic and impulsive loads. Response to a generic load: Duhamel's integral. Response to the motion of the supports. Applications. Time history direct integration.

Linear dynamics of  N d.o.f. systems

Free and forced motions of elastic systems. Modal Analysis. Eigenvalues and mode shapes. Numerical method to determine eigenpairs. Damped systems: the case of proportional damping.

Linear dynamics of continuous systems.

Free vibrations of rods. Axial and bending vibrations. Forced motion; modal anaysis.

Italian seismic code. The elastic response spectrum of an oscillator. Pseudo-velocity and pseudo-acceleration. The design spectrum of the Italian seismic code. General criteria of design. Static and dynamical analysis: an example.
