Objectives

The course aims at analyzing design and planning issues of industrial systems and their optimization: facility location, assembly and distribution systems, multiple firms solutions (district-oriented Facilities Management and Industrial Symbiosis), System safety engineering.

Acquired skills

- Adopting the proper model/tool to locate an industrial facility.
- Designing and planning advanced industrial facilities: assembly lines, crossdocks, self-organising systems.
- Enabling industrial symbiosis by an optimisation approach.
- Analysing system safety and managing risks.

Lectures and exercises (topics and specific content)

Facility location: facility location enabling factors, facility location problem, static/dynamic, deterministic/probabilistic problems (median location problems, uncapacitated fixed-charge location problems, center problems, covering location problems) (8 hours).
Production and distribution systems:  crossdocking facilities: shape and layout optimization, trailer scheduling; assembly lines, characteristics (pacing, number of products, layout, parallel stations and tasks, team oriented assembly), simple assembly line balancing problem (SALBP), ALBP with parallel tasks, U-line assembly line balancing problem (UALBP), Mixed-model assembly line balancing problem (MALBP), Mixed-model sequencing, car sequencing, level scheduling; self-organising systems, bucket brigades (normative and generalized model) (30 hours).
Facilities Management & Industrial Symbiosis: Facilities Management for industrial areas and districts; industrial symbiosis, concepts and optimisation models (10 hours).
System Safety Engineering and Risk Management: System Safety and Risk Analysis, Energy Analysis, Hazard and Operability studies, FMEA/FMECA, Occupational safety (12 hours).
Exercises (10 hours).
