Physiological and molecular study of mechanisms involved in iron and nitrogen nutrition in crops.

Supervisors: Prof. Roberto Pinton, Prof. Nicola Tomasi

Mineral nutrition has an essential role in crop production due to their crucial roles in numerous aspects of plant metabolism, growth and development. Their imbalance can affect plants in many ways such as impaired responses to biotic and abiotic stresses, altered crop yields and quality, for these reasons, it is important to study their responses to nutritional stresses.

Given these premises the PhD project can be divided in two research lines as follows:

The first line of the project is focused on nitrogen, as it is involved in innumerable physiological processes in living organisms. Especially this line plans to examine nitrate acquisition dynamic in crops, held in different experimental conditions, and the putative beneficial effects of biostimulants on this process.

The second line is focused on the severe problem of Iron-induced deficiency chlorosis in grapevine, in particular when grown in lime-rich soil condition. The main aim of this research line is to evaluate the stress responses of different grapevine rootstocks and to advance our knowledge of iron deficiency response in grapevine.
