Abstract

This project aims at investigating and promoting one of the most significant episodes of a typical 20th century literary trend: the translation of a poetic work by another poet.

The protagonist is Giovanni Giudici (1924-2011), one of the greatest poets of the Italian middle twentieth century, who in the 1970s published a translation of the Russian Romanticism masterpiece: Puškin’s Eugene Onegin. This translation is a peculiar experiment for several reasons that many avant-textual documents relating to Giudici’s translations from Russian to Italian can highlight.

This research project is proposing a) the enhancement of some invaluable and as yet unpublished avant-textual materials of Giudici’s archive and b) a genetic digital edition of a translation as a case study, taking into account not only the source and translation but, as well as the draft material showing the genesis of Onegin’s Italian version. This project therefore responds both to scholarly research questions and to a desire to employ state-ofthe-art methods in the Digital Humanities (DH) and in digital philology. The objective is twofold: on the one hand, the project will enhance the textual and philological aspects of translation studies (contributing to the little practised field of “genetics of translation”); on the other, it will explore and formalise digital editing methods suited to the peculiarities of its object.
