Abstract
The fascinating history of the use of traditional remedies begins with the first written attestations of medical texts in Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. The main purpose of the project PANEM (Plants in Ancient Near Eastern Medicine) is to understand Mesopotamian herbal medicine as attested in the published cuneiform documents dating from the 3rd to 1st millennia BC.
In order to understand the Mesopotamian pharmacopoeia, the careful identification of the medicinal plants mentioned in the texts is needed. To identify the plants, an innovative, multidisciplinary approach will be used, combining lexicographic and philological analysis, ethnosciences (ethnobotany), botany, and archaeobotany. This multidisciplinary approach is made possible by the host institution, the Centro di Ricerca Interdipartimentale di Medicina Antica (RIMA - Interdepartmental Research Center for Ancient Medicine) of the University of Udine, which combines the competences of three university departments (Humanistic Studies; Medical Studies; Food and Agriculture Studies).
After the identification of the medicinal plants, the Mesopotamian pharmacopoeia can be analysed both with regard to its intrinsic properties and from a comparative perspective (ethnomedicine), thus answering important questions about the therapeutic principles widespread in the ancient Near East.
The PANEM project will make advances in a number of fields (Semitic linguistics; ancient Near Eastern studies; history of medicine; ethnosciences) and can contribute to the understanding of ancient medicines in general.
The impact of PANEM will be enhanced by the creation of a database containing all relevant data about the medicinal plants mentioned in the cuneiform documents, which will be made open access after the end of the project.
