Abstract

The objectives that the project aims to achieve are associated with improving the current understanding of resilience, which is a context-dependent, multi-level concept. Therefore, our project focuses on resilience at network and organizational level, and on how resilience at each single level eventually interacts with resilience at other levels. Our project advances knowledge along two main paths: 1. Definition of network resilience and determinants of resilience for coping with different sources of adversities - The project will initially identify grey areas of the current knowledge on network resilience and will highlight how resilience capabilities are generated at network level. Drawing on a diversified and integrated sets of research methods (i.e. survey, case studies, ABM) and leveraging the established collaboration of Ca’ Foscari University unit with RetImpresa, we will advance knowledge on the relationship between sources of adversities (e.g. systemic or local shocks, stress conditions) and the most effective actions to anticipate, prepare, cope and adjust to it. In doing so, we will not only contribute to network studies that are neglecting the role of resilience as an indicator of the performance of a network, but we will also address a call for more knowledge “about how the characteristics of specific adverse events as well as their formation and unfolding affect downstream activities and subsequent events” 2. Transfer of resilience across levels – Drawing on a multilevel approach and quasi-experimental research design, we will advance knowledge on those processes and conditions that favor or hinder the transfer of resilience across levels. Indeed, current understanding of resilience provides scant knowledge on whether and how determinants at single levels interact among each other across levels.
